Although the chapter is named "Mexican Springs", the
community is called "Nakaibito" in Navajo, literally
meaning the name of the chapter. The community is located
about 19 miles north of Gallup, New Mexico on the southern
base of the Chuska Mountain. The chapter was certified on
December 5, 1955 by the Navajo Tribal Council.
The Mexican Springs Chapter conducts meetings monthly to
keep residents informed; residents have a forum to express
their opinions to their Navajo Nation Council Delegate or
to decide on matters concerning their chapter.
Upcoming Chapter Meetings:
- February 01, 2010 6:30 pm-Planning Meeting
-
TBA February 2010 - Chapter Meeting
Sub-areas of the Mexican Springs Chapter include Black Wash
Spring, Red Springs, Cactus Mesa, Assayi and Todiltah Park.
These have been home to many generation of Navajo families,
historically enduring extraordinary circumstances
environmentally, economically and politically. The chapter
area has recreational areas such as Assayi Lake and Whiskey
Lake for fishers, camper, and hikers. Camp Assayi has
recreational facilities for youth camping activities or
others who just want to get away from the crowd and want to
relax in the san and enjoy the cool mountain breeze. So
pack up your gear and come enjoy a great summer break in
the Chuska Mountains and hills of the Mexican Springs
Chapter.
